Now this is a rare find - I don't say that very often but in this case this is an authentic late 1700's, early 1800's Chocolate pot with all the attributes you would expect from a hand made piece.

The body is made in one piece (!), hammered into shape by an artisan Coppersmith.

The lid has a reassuring hole in the top for the wooden Mill or Molinet that is there to stir the very expensive chocolate mix in it. There is wear around the hole. There are some small pin dents where the mill has hit the lid. It has some wavyness in the lid edge but remarkably it sits snugly in the body. The base has many indentations from the mill hitting it over the years, it is watertight. (We have not polished the base)

The body has numerous dents and small indentations. There is a slightly larger one near the base.

The handle mount is firmly fixed, the wooden handle has a wobble.

It has a small copper skirt to keep the base from the heat source, an English based design.

This is a museum piece that was sitting forlorn in a 'Brocante' Shop in the Mayenne.

This was originally used for chocolate in the mid to late 1700's to early 1800's, as the process for grinding cocoa beans was in it's infancy the chocolate 'powder' which was ground cocoa nibs using a 'metate' or grinding stone, used to fall to the bottom so it was customary to use a Mill (not unlike a honey dipper or drizzler) to stir the chocolate before pouring.

It is very rare to find a pot like this that hasn't been altered with a fineal on the top to close off the hole - later chocolate pots, after the invention of Chocolate powder in 1828 by the Dutch Chemist Vanhouten, have a fineal, or another type of handle, rather than a hole.

This is a French one that takes it design from the English Georgian coffee pots, where the fashion of drinking chocolate started. There is no spout which is an indication of an older chocolate pot, this enables the mixture to stay within the pot itself and not get stuck up the spout.

This is a fantastic old pot, comes with a mill or molinet, we don't think this is the original but it fits perfectly, there is minor wear from the milling hole.

It is 20 cm high, 10 cms across the base, Which is 8 ins and 4 ins, end of handle to far edge is 27cm 10 5/8. It weighs 573 grams which is 1lb 4.2 ozs. Please note all conversions are approximate.
